Panaiotis and Nandkishor Muley - Rising Sun - 03 - Evening Prayer

Price: $3.00

“Evening Prayer” is one of five songs on the Rising Sun album by Panaiotis and Nandkishor Muley. The song is in MP3 format (192 kbps) and runs 17:00.

Indian classical music is improvised. Western classical music is generally composed. So when Panaiotis and Nandkishor Muley collaborated, they used their own traditions in the development of these works.

Using a sophisticated software program he developed called SoundCycler, Panaiotis adjusted the approximately 2,000 parameters that are used to create a texture. These were inspired by particular raga and influenced by non-western traditions. Nandu listened to these textures and then recorded an improvisation with them. The textures often acted as complex drone elements, but unlike the tambura that usually plays the drone, Panaiotis’ textures weave in and out of the foreground.

Nandkishor then created the alap. This is unusual, since the main part of the improvisation is supposed to be based on the introductory alap, not the other way around. Once the live material was recorded, Panaiotis tailored and fine-tuned the textures around Muley’s improvisations, adding embellishments and ambience to the introductory alaps, and in some cases creating melodic counterpoint to Muley’s santur.

Panaiotis is a composer whose works have been performed throughout the US, Europe, and Japan. He has toured worldwide as singer and as performer of computer-assisted performance electronics. He has collaborated in the creation of eight compact disc recordings, two of which were chosen by The New York Times as among the top ten CDs of new music for their respective release years.

Nandkishor Muley is recognized as one of the great masters of the Indian santur. Concertizing at world music festivals throughout the world, Nandkishor has introduced the santur and Indian music to many countries that had never before heard this instrument.

Produced, mixed and edited by Panaiotis.
Recorded at the Panatorium (PanatoriumStudio@aol.com).
