Drinker's Check-up

UNM's Science & Technology Corporation has partnered with Behavior Therapy Associates, LLP, to distribute The Drinker's Check-up (DCU) through foliodirect. The software was developed by Dr. Reid Hester, the director of Behavior Therapy Associates' Research Division. Dr. Hester is also a Research Associate Professor at UNM.

The Drinker's Check-up is a brief motivational intervention for heavy drinkers who are ambivalent about whether or not to change their drinking. The software is designed for therapists who work with heavy drinkers.

This Windows version of the DCU also has a follow-up component, which allows therapists to collect data at three follow-ups. Outcome data collection is automated and therapists also can create detailed outcome reports for individual clients, for their entire sample of clients, and for specific sub-groups of clients. Essentially, the data can be used for program evaluation.

The effectiveness of the DCU was evaluated in a randomized clinical trial (Hester, Squires, and Delaney, 2005). Participants in the clinical trial reduced their drinking, alcohol-related problems, and symptoms of dependence by 50%, on average, from the baseline to the 12 month follow-up. Please note that this version of the DCU was evaluated with older aduts (mean age 45). The developers do not think it would be appropriate for younger adults (i.e., 18-24 years old).

The price of the DCU includes a license to use it with an unlimited number of clients on one PC. There are no per-use fees or annual fees.
